Must Do 2024 Summer Activities in Kyrgyzstan

summer activities in kyrgyzstan

If you’re planning a trip to Kyrgyzstan during the summer, get ready for an unforgettable experience. Kyrgyzstan has something for everyone, especially for adventure seekers. From breathtaking natural landscapes to rich cultural heritage, Bishkek offers a myriad of activities that will make your summer truly memorable. I'll be sharing a list of must-do summer activities you should do in Kyrgyzstan.

1. Visit Lake Issyk Kul

Issyk Kul Lake itself is a major attraction in Central Asia, known for being one of the largest alpine lakes in the world. Its crystal-clear waters and stunning mountain backdrop make it perfect for swimming, boating, and relaxing on the beach. You'll see tons of locals escape the heat in the capital city, Bishkek, and spend their summers in Issyk Kul, and even tourists from neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Enjoy the sandy beaches, and clear water, and engage in fun activities such as swimming, boating, and jet skiing.

If you want to do a guided tour, I recommend the following:

2. Attend Local Events

The World Nomad Games are a unique and exhilarating event that celebrates the rich cultural heritage and traditional sports of nomadic civilizations. This year, it will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan from September 8 to 13, 2024. There will be 21 types of sporting events, with more than 2000 participants from more than 85 countries. I know it's not in Kyrgyzstan, but if you are unfortunate to take a trip to Astana from Bishkek, I highly recommend you attend this event.

3. Visit Ala Archa National Park

Ala Archa National Park is a stunning natural reserve located just 40 kilometers south of Bishkek, making it an easily accessible destination for both locals and tourists. The park covers an area of 200 square kilometers and offers a diverse range of landscapes, from lush green valleys to rugged mountain peaks, providing a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

It's great for hikers and trekkers, offering numerous trails that cater to different skill levels. One of the most popular routes is the Ak-Sai Waterfall trail, which takes about 3-4 hours round trip and rewards hikers with breathtaking views of a cascading waterfall. For more experienced adventurers, the trek to the Ratsek Hut provides a challenging yet rewarding experience, with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

You don't just have to go hiking, but it offers an ideal spot for picnicking with family and friends. There are designated picnic areas where you can enjoy a nicely packed meal amidst nature. If you would like to do guided tours, here are a few options:

4. Go Horseback Riding at Song Kul Lake

Go Horseback Riding at Song Kul Lake

If you visit Issyk Kul Lake, I recommend visiting Song Kul Lake afterward. The lake is situated at an altitude of over 3,000 meters and is a prime spot for experiencing the traditional nomadic lifestyle of Kyrgyzstan. Visitors can stay in yurts, the traditional felt tents used by nomads, and immerse themselves in the local culture. This offers a unique opportunity to learn about the customs, cuisine, and daily life of the Kyrgyz people.

The area offers a variety of activities such as horseback riding, hiking, and bird watching. The surrounding meadows and mountains are home to diverse flora and fauna, making it an excellent destination for nature lovers and photographers. For those interested in astronomy, Song Kul Lake offers a stargazing experience. The high altitude and lack of light pollution create ideal conditions for observing the night sky. On clear nights, the Milky Way is vividly visible, making it a memorable experience for astronomy enthusiasts.

5. Go Bungee Jumping

Only 33 kilometers from Bishkek, roughly a 1-hour drive is Flyjump, a popular site to go bungee jumping with a drop of 60 meters. It's an exhilarating experience for thrill-seekers looking to add a dose of adrenaline to their summer activities. It costs 2000 Kyrgyz soms for a jump and not that you won't get a refund if you back out. They do charge extra for add-ons such as getting to film your jump with a Go-Pro. Honestly, the price is a steal, considering I paid over USD 150 when I bungee jumped in Queenstown, New Zealand.
