Welcome to Almaty! My trip to the city was quite short but one of the highlights of my trip was dining at Tarih, a restaurant that perfectly embodies the spirit of Kazakh and Central Asian tradition with a modern twist. Here's a glimpse into my experience at Tarih:
The moment I stepped into Tarih, I was immediately struck by the beautiful interior design and warm and welcoming ambiance. The restaurant's decor is a mix of traditional Kazakh elements and modern elegance. The setting perfectly reflects the restaurant's name, Tarih, which means "history" in Kazakh. I highly recommend coming here for a nice date night, a business meeting, or if you're looking to have a more sophisticated meal with friends.
As I scanned their menu, I could see that it offered a selection of traditional dishes with a modern twist. These are some of the dishes we ordered and note that their menu can always change, so the dishes I ate may not be available.
I don't remember the name of this dish, but its main feature was the horsemeat with a side of a smooth puree. It was my first time trying horsemeat and I was pleasantly surprised by the rich, savory flavor. The presentation was impeccable, and this traditional dish was turned into a more sophisticated experience without losing its authenticity.
Beshbarmark: This is the national dish of Kazakhstan and it is traditionally made with boiled meat (usually lamb, beef, or horsemeat) served over flat noodles. Tarih's version was a refined take on this hearty meal and was more of a lasagna style. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. The dish was accompanied by a side of a rich broth that brought all the flavors together.
Manti: If you had the chance to try manti, you'll immediately notice the bright green color of the dough and the contrast to the traditional dish. It was delicious and to put it simply, it is a dumpling filled with savory ingredients and steamed to perfection. If you're interested in making manti at home, which I've done many times, check out my recipe here: How to Make Manti (Central Asian Cuisine).
Tarih is more expensive than other local restaurants, but it is a restaurant if you want a more elegant, contemporary experience. I highly recommend making a reservation beforehand as the restaurant can get busy during the weekends.
